How does a silent disco actually work?

A silent disco is where everyone wears wireless headphones and switches between three channels of music — all broadcast from a single transmitter. No PA. No speakers. No noise complaints. Just a room full of people dancing to their own choice of music.

Our silent disco hire packages are plug-and-play simple. You get the headphones, the transmitter and a printed instruction manual in the box, plus a digital copy by email. Stuck on the night? Our out-of-hours technical helpline picks up on the first ring.

Where silent disco hire works best

You’ll find us anywhere a speaker stack would be a problem. Weddings that need to run past the venue’s 11pm curfew without anyone getting evicted. Festivals that want a third stage without the council issuing noise abatement notices. Schools and universities with neighbours, sound limiters, or risk assessments to clear. Corporate events in offices, galleries and museum atriums where amplified sound is a non-starter. Bars and nightclubs with sound limiters mounted on the wall. Beaches, woodlands, rooftops, boats — anywhere without mains, without PA infrastructure, or without permission to make a racket.

The honest answer: if your venue has a postcode, we’ve probably done a silent disco there.

How the kit actually works

At the heart of every silent disco is a wireless transmitter. Plug it into a laptop, a mixer, a DJ deck or a mic — anything with a 3.5mm or XLR output — and it broadcasts that audio over a stable RF signal up to 300 metres line-of-sight.

Each guest gets a wireless headset that picks up the broadcast. Three buttons on the side: power, channel switch, volume. An LED ring around each earcup glows red, green or blue depending on which channel they’re tuned to — so from across the room you can see exactly how the crowd’s splitting between DJs.

The whole thing is plug-and-play. We brief your DJ or run-of-show in five minutes when we drop the kit off. Then it just works for as long as you need it to.

What to expect on the night

You hand the headphones out at the door — guests put them on, music starts, party begins. From the outside the room reads as quiet (no PA boom, no neighbours phoning the council), but inside it’s a full party with conversations happening over the top of the music because every guest controls their own volume.

Photographers love it. Everyone’s holding the headphones, smiling, the LED rings light up the shots. There’s never a moment where the music is too loud to talk to your nan.

When a guest wants a break, they lift the headphones off and chat. When they want back in, they put them back on and the party’s still going. Nobody shouts, nobody complains, and nobody has to leave because the venue says so.

What is a silent disco?

A silent disco swaps the speakers for wireless LED headphones. Every guest hears the music directly through their own pair, so from outside the room reads as quiet — but inside it's a full party. Up to three DJs broadcast at once, and your guests pick which channel to dance to.

How do silent disco headphones work?

A wireless transmitter plugs into your audio source (laptop, mixer, decks, mic) and broadcasts the signal over RF. Each headset is a receiver — a button on the side switches channel, a dial controls personal volume, and an LED ring around the earcup glows by channel so you can see at a glance who's tuned to what.

How many channels do you offer?

Three live channels per event. That means up to three DJs or playlists running simultaneously, and your guests flick between them on the headset. You can mix and match — a wedding might run nan's classics on one, the bridesmaids' chart hits on another, and old-school garage on the third.

How far does the wireless signal reach?

Up to 300 metres line-of-sight from the transmitter. For most venues — weddings, conferences, outdoor festivals, large halls — that covers every guest with zero dropouts. For bigger sites or sites with obstructions, we run multiple transmitters off the same source.

How long do the headphones last on one charge?

Around 10 hours of continuous use. We always deliver them fully charged, so a typical wedding, festival day, or corporate event runs the full distance without needing to swap kit. For multi-day events we provide a charging dock.

Do you deliver across the UK?

Yes — we're based in Preston and deliver nationwide. Same-day across the North West, next-day to anywhere else in mainland UK. Self-collection from our Preston warehouse is an option if you're local and want to save a few quid.

How much does silent disco hire cost?

It depends on the headphone count and event duration, but it's always flat-rate with no hidden extras. Get a quote and you'll have a final figure in under 24 hours. Smaller weddings and parties typically start in the low hundreds; festival and corporate scales from there.

How far in advance should I book?

Earlier is better, especially for peak summer weekends and festival season. As a rough guide: 6+ weeks for weddings, 2–3 weeks for corporate events, and same-week is often still possible if we have kit free. Just ask — we'll tell you straight.

What if it's outdoors and it rains?

The headphones are water-resistant and we cover transmitters with weatherproof boxes for outdoor setups. We've run silent discos in everything from beach sun to drizzle to full British downpours. Rain doesn't stop the party — it just gives the photos more atmosphere.

Can multiple DJs play at once?

Yes — that's the whole point. Up to three DJs (or three playlists) broadcast simultaneously, each on their own channel. Guests flick between them on the headset and dance to whoever's going off hardest. Cuts the cost of a B2B set and doubles the energy on the floor.
